Podium discussion: Do you still write yourself? How AI is changing our education system

Language models such as ChatGPT or Bard have been dominating the public discussion for weeks and have brought the possibilities, but also the challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) into the focus of attention. The reactions are very different: While some are indignant about the content-related errors of the robot texts, others are enthusiastic about how texts can be generated in a matter of seconds with technical help. In general, it is hardly recognisable at first glance whether a text was written by a machine or a human being. One thing is certain: the digital transformation is unstoppable. Text automation programmes will become better and better and will have an impact on many areas of life, especially on our education system.

How will we teach and learn in the future? How can we use AI constructively and meaningfully in teaching and learning? What prior knowledge and competences does this require from teachers, students and pupils? What are the limits, dangers and challenges of this new technology? Can AI lead to more educational justice? We would like to discuss these and many other questions with our panelists and with you - dear teachers, students, pupils and those interested in AI!

Panelists
Navika Bhardwaj attends the 10th grade at the Archbishop Maria-Ward-Gymnasium Nymphenburg. She is a student representative and is also involved in the Munich city student council.
Prof. Dr. Eric Hilgendorf is Chair of Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Legal Theory, Information Law and Legal Informatics at the University of Würzburg and a member of the bidt Board of Directors of BAdW. He deals with ethical and legal issues of digitalisation.
Prof. Dr. Enkelejda Kasneci is Director of the TUM Center for Educational Technologies, Liesel-Beckmann Distinguished Professor and Chair of Human-Centered Technologies for Learning at TUM. She is concerned with the use of AI in education.
Oliver Masur completed his 2nd state examination in 2022 and teaches German and Latin at the Theresien-Gymnasium in Munich. He recently investigated whether the production of literary texts by machines is an enrichment with a 12th grade class.
Dr Matthias Stadler works as an academic councillor at the Chair of Empirical Pedagogy and Educational Psychology at LMU Munich and is a member of the BAdW's Junge Kolleg. His research focuses, among other things, on the media competence of teachers.

Heike Schmoll has been a member of the political editorial staff of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung since 1989. She is responsible for education policy and the "Education Worlds" page. She has been a correspondent in Berlin since 2008.
