Event: Criminal Law in Germany, Latin America and Spain
08/29/2022From 28 to 30 July 2022, the event "Criminal Law in Germany, Latin America and Spain" took place at the Alte Universität of the Julius-Maximilians-University of Würzburg. It was organised by Prof. Dr. Dr. Eric Hilgendorf (Würzburg) in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Luis Emilio Rojas (Universidad Alberto Hurtado) and with the support of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Juristen Alumni Würzburg e.V..
The conference was made up of three different events. The focus was on academic exchange between German- and Spanish-language criminal law, in which various academics from Germany, Latin America and Spain participated. Several academics from China, Taiwan and Turkey also participated in the event.
On Thursday 28 July, the workshop "Truth and Correctness in Law" took place in the morning. The aim was to discuss the application of the terms "truth" and "correctness", which are characteristic of various areas of philosophy, to criminal law. The individual lectures were given by Prof. Dr. Dr. Eric Hilgendorf, Prof. Dr. Luis Emilio Rojas, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Marcelo Sancinetti (Buenos Aires), Leandro Dias, LL.M. (Würzburg) and Lucila Tuñón, LL.M. (Würzburg).
The ceremony for the awarding of the Festschrift for Marcelo Sancinetti was scheduled for the second day. Although the Festschrift was published in 2020, on Prof. Sancinetti's 70th birthday, it was only two years later that the conditions were right to celebrate the ceremony in person. It took place in the Neubaukirche of the Alte Universität, was accompanied by musical accompaniment by Dr. Dr. Dr. Jürgen Buchner and began with an introduction by Prof. Hilgendorf. This was followed by speeches by Prof. Dr. Joachim Suerbaum (Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Würzburg), Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Jesús-María Silva Sánchez (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) and Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Manuel Cancio Meliá (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid). The keynote speech was given by Prof. em. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Frisch (Freiburg) and dealt with the history of the doctrine of objective attribution and its most important problematic aspects. The ceremony ended with the handover of the book by Prof. Hilgendorf and with some brief closing remarks by Prof. Sancinetti.
The third event on 29 and 30 July 2022 was a workshop in honour of a major figure in the criminal law discussion of recent decades: Prof. Jesús-María Silva Sánchez. Ten academics gave lectures on various focal points of the jubilarian's academic work over the two days. In addition to the speakers, the event was moderated on the first day by Prof. Dr. Luis Emilio Rojas and on the second day by Prof. Liching Chang (National University of Kaohsiung). The presentations on the first day were given by Prof. Dr. Dr. Eric Hilgendorf (Würzburg), Leandro Dias, LL.M. (Würzburg), Prof. Dr. Katharina Beckemper (Leipzig), Prof. Dr. Benno Zabel (Frankfurt) and Dr. Thomas Grosse-Wilde (Bonn). On the second day, Lucila Tuñón, LL.M. (Würzburg), Prof. Dr Hans Kudlich (Erlangen), Prof. Dr Luís Greco (Berlin), Prof. Dr Michael Kubiciel (Augsburg) and Prof. Dr Gunnar Duttge (Göttingen) gave lectures.
In order to further develop the academic links between Germany, Latin America and Spain, books will be published with the contributions to the workshop "Truth and Correctness in Law" and with the presentations of the Silva Sanchez work visit The complete programme of the event can be downloaded from the following link: Program of the Conference
