Postgraduate Studies in European Law at the University of Würzburg

Welcome to the postgraduate Studies in European Law

The postgraduate studies give qualified students after completion of their undergraduate education the opportunity to engage in an advanced educational programme in European Law. 

Successful completion of the programme leads to the attainment of a Master of Laws in European Law (LL. M. Eur.).

Entry requirements for the postgraduate studies
Prospective students should have an above-average professional qualifying degree in Law or Economics or in a comparable field of study awarded by a German or foreign academic institution. Applicants with mother tongues other than German are required to sit the "German Language Test for foreign applicants for admission to academic institutions" (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber" - DSH), if they are not exempted from this requirement for having already obtained a certificate of comparable ranking. This language test can also be taken at the University of Würzburg before registration.

The costs of the study will be about 100 € per semester (including a ticket for local public traffic system).

Structure of the postgraduate studies
The studies normally last three semesters. The first two semesters are spent taking part in courses accompanied by the attainment of academic credits. The courses can be chosen by the students from the respective pro-gramme offered for the postgraduate studies. The third semester involves the compilation of the master thesis.

Academic credits
Academic credits for the courses are to be obtained - as a rule in the German language - in written or oral form, in accordance with the choice of the lecturer.
Up to 6 semester week hours of academic credits from courses taken in other studies at German or foreign aca-demic institutions can be accredited as long as they are of an equivalent standard; the Study and Examination Board will decide on applications for accreditation.

Master Thesis, Award of Master of Laws in European Law (LL.M.Eur)
Students who have achieved academic credits from courses belonging to the postgraduate studies in European Law - as well as, possibly, accreditable academic credits from other courses - amounting to 24 semester week hours will be eligible for the master thesis. 
Upon successful completion of the master thesis, the Dean of the Law Faculty will award candidates the academic degree of "Master of Laws in European Law" (Legum Europaearum Magister - LL.M. Eur.).

Certificate of advanced studies in European Law
Students who have achieved academic credits from courses belonging to the postgraduate studies in European Law - as well as, possibly, accreditable academic credits from other courses - amounting to 24 semester week hours will be awarded at their request (independently of their possible admission to the master thesis) a "Certificate of advanced studies in European Law".
