Waste for some could be livelihoods for others. Across urban India, waste pickers (largely female) rummage through the public bins to retrieve recyclable materials such as paper, plastics, metals and glass. Their labor of segregation triggers the informal recycling chains and makes waste monetizable. But do they have a right to derive this value hidden in waste? The lecture would outline the struggles of waste pickers in the city of Pune (India) for greater dignity of their labor and going further, a right to the waste collected by them.
